    Question: Soy is a complicated issue, with amadant people on both sides of the fence. However, much of the soy controversy seems to resolve once the type, amount, and quality of the soy as well as the circumstances of the person considering the soy are clearly defined. On the downside, soy can be allergenic, an enzyme inhibitor, and an endocrine disrupter (particularly of thyroid and reproductive hormones), especially since almost all soy is genetically modified. Its contribution to risk of breast cancer or recurrence should probably be of concern less for its estrogenic qualities than for its thyroid inhibiting qualities. On the upside, the soy isoflavone known as genistein is a potent anti-cancer angiogenesis inhibitor, and the weak sources of phytoestrogens can actually compete with and blunt the more aggressive xenoestrogens that promote breast cancer. If you do consume soy,make sure it is organic and non-GMO, and have your thyroid checked periodically. Susan Silberstein
