Acetyl-L-carnitine is similar in form to the amino acid L-carnitine and also has similar functions, such as involvement in the metabolism of food into energy. The acetyl group that is part of acetyl-L-carnitine contributes to the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine, which is required for mental function. Acetyl-L-carnitine may reduce formation of lipofusin in the heart and brain. Acetyl-L Carnitine may enhance energy by transporting fatty acids into the mitochondria.Acetyl-L-carnitine may normalize sleeping patterns by increasing the nightime production of melatonin in the pineal gland.
