Question: So, there are several dfriefent forms of calcium supplements. Calcium carbonate, calcium citrate, there are pills, chewables and liquids. I think Vitamin World might be the only store that sells calcium in a liquid form which is easier to absorb. The last time I checked, GNC didn't have that. The problem with calcium carbonate is that you have to take them with food (ie. at meal times) to absorb the calcium. You might be better off with calcium citrate which can be taken any time. The other thing you should be aware of is that you need to take Vitamin D with calcium so that the calcium can be taken up into your bones. There are supplements with Vitamin D and calcium. You can also get calcium, Vitamin D and Vitamin K together in a chewable like Viactiv . The other issue to be aware of is that your body can only absorb 500 mg of Calcium at one time. That's why 500 mg is the maximum dose pill that is available. If you take any more, you just won't get anything out of it. So, to get the recommended daily dose of 1,000 mg this means that you have to take two doses at separate times during the day. Another concern is that calcium can inhibit the absorption of other drugs and vitamins. You want to check with your doctor if you are taking other medications or supplements. I take two calcium supplements per day and an iron supplement. Iron and Calcium are absorbed competitively , so I have to take all three at separate times of the day. It's a pain. Talk to a nutritionist they can help you figure out how much calcium to get in your diet using supplements and foods. Good luck!
