Bromelain is a conglomeration of enzymes programmed to process proteins. Naturally derived form the stem of the pineapple, Bromelain works with other bodily enzymes to better digest food. Proteins, for example cannot be directly absorbed and utilized by the body. The enzymes which compose Bromelain chemically break down these proteins, allowing the amino acids and other nutrients to be readily absorbed.

In addition to aiding digestion, Bromelain is thought to be beneficial in relieving swelling and inflammation akin to physical injury and infection. Bromelain may be used as an alternative to diclofenac or ibuprofen in the relief of pain associated with arthritis.
